After a series of internal emails we believe proved to be embarrassing to the Saint Paul city administration, the Mayor and City Council, on August 1st 2015, enacted a resolution to delete emails after a six month period of time. The authority for these deletions is vested with any city employee who so desires and wishes never to disclose certain information.
Saint Paul STRONG believes this policy demonstrates an effort to hinder transparency and, in turn, accountability. It also puts the City of Saint Paul at risk of not being able to prove through documentation its ability to defend against unwarranted and frivolous law suits. Staff time for managing electronic deletions is also substantially increased.
What We're Doing About It:
Saint Paul STRONG will make ongoing requests to the city clerk of Saint Paul, subject to the Minnesota Data Practices Act, to save all city government data relating to any specific issue deemed important in whatever physical or electronic form, including but not limited to written documents, emails, twitter or Instagram messages, relevant contents of computers and paper correspondence.
Saint Paul STRONG will develop a list of requested issue documentation for preservation, which will then be made available to any individual in the public as well as well as requests from the media.
